Dominic Thiem v Kyle Edmund Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2017 Barcelona Open and Thiem had won that in straight sets.

Thiem Showing Signs of Improvement

Thiem’s most immediate goal is to maintain a top-100 ranking as he looks to qualify for Grand Slams without the need of a wildcard or worse still, having to play in the qualifiers.

And the manner in which he has gone about his business over the last three tournaments he has played, it does look like there are those traces from his past good self.

After having started off the season with just one win from 10 matches, Thiem has found a bit of his calling on the clay courts of Europe. He started with a couple of wins at the Estoril Open which took him to the quarterfinal there and followed it up with a second round appearance at the Monte-Carlo Masters.

At the Barcelona Open last week, Thiem defeated Constant Lestienne and Marc-Andrea Huesler to make another last-eight showing before Taylor Fritz ended his run.

Thiem will now start things out against a player who has himself had a lot of struggles in recent times and has barely won anything.

Edmund Hunting for Maiden Win

So deep have been Edmund’s issues that he hasn’t moved too much in the direction he would have liked as far as his rankings are concerned.

The Brit is currently 498th in the world, having at one point reached a career-best of 14th on the ATP charts. And while it was an injury issue that had kept him out of action for a while, his return has been anything spectacular.

So much so that Edmund was forced to play on the Futures circuit earlier this month where he managed to finally win a couple of rounds.

Returning to Munich last week, the Brit lost to Marc-Andrea Huesler but he will take heart from the fact he managed to push his Swiss opponent to three sets. The question now is if he can do something similar to a player who has had his own issues with form, but at the same time has shown some old spark.

Thiem v Edmund Prediction and Tip

While Thiem is a favourite here, it’s interesting to see Edmund start out as a 4/1 underdog here. We could see Edmund push Thiem hard in one of the sets but can he win a set? Could be a high-risk call that.
