Sloane Stephens v Jaqueline Cristian Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between Stephens and Cristian.

Stephens 1-4 in the Last Five

A quarterfinalist at the Austin Open and a quarterfinalist in Merida too, Stephens then fell into the kind of slump that has often defined the inconsistencies of her career.

Having started off the season with three successive defeats, Stephens made the last eight stage of the aforementioned tournaments. And then she lost four of the next five matches.

Stephens’ only win came at the Charleston Open where she overcame the 239th-ranked Loiusa Chirico before falling to Victoria Azarenka in the second. Those have been her only two matches on clay for the season.

It was an interesting previous season on clay for the American too.

She started things off with four successive defeats but then out of nowhere made the quarterfinal at the French Open. In three of those four wins at Roland-Garros, Stephens had gone in as the second-favourite too making it a tough call predicting how she would go in a match!

Cristian Focussed on the ITF Circuit

Cristian has done reasonably well on clay in her career with five of her 13 lower-level titles having come on this surface.

This year itself, the Romanian won an ITF title at Palmanova on clay and followed it up with a semifinal appearance at Koper in the week leading up to this competition in Madrid.

That gives Cristian the sort of confidence coming into her opener that could do wonders as she faces a player who has been a former French Open runner-up.

At the highest level, however, Cristian has had her issues this season with the former world number 58 failing to qualify for the Auckland Open, losing in the opener in Hobart, and going down 6-0, 6-1 in the first round of the Australian Open. Things were different in Linz and Bogota either.

Which is why despite her opponent’s struggles at times, this might not be a straightforward one.

Stephens v Cristian Prediction and Tip

Stephens should come through in this one, but expect a three-set battle that goes down to the wire.
