Pavlyuchenkova, Taking Things Slow

Former world number 11 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is taking things slowly and steadily after coming from a long injury layoff.

She picked up a knee injury in 2022 that forced her to miss three of the four majors, ending the year early at 2-3.

The 31-year-old Russian is ranked #599 and has spent the last few weeks competing in the ITF Tour, where she reached the quarterfinal in Croissy-Beaubourg and round two in Zaragoza.

With a tally of 4-6, Pavlyuchenkova is yet to win a WTA singles main-draw match in 2023. On the doubles side, she reached the final in Adelaide International doubles with Elena Rybakina.

As the 2021 French Open runner-up and Madrid Open semifinalist, Anastasia has got some experience and pedigree to win big again. For the time being, it all boils down to her fitness.

Jimenez, a Star in the Making?

17-year-old Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva is set to feature in the main draw of the Madrid Open for the second time in her career. She made her WTA Tour debut right here in 2021, losing to Kiki Bertens.

The youngster has a long way to go on the circuit, given that she was still competing in the junior events until last July.

In 2023, Jimenez has featured in only three tournaments – Miami Open, Australian Open, and ITF Boca Raton. She was the most successful in the ITF one, winning the title by beating Whitney Osuigwe in the final. The Andorran player also reached the final qualifying round in Melbourne. All in all, she is 7-2 so far.

Pavlyuchenkova v Kasintseva Prediction and Tip

On any other day, Pavlyuchenkova would have been the heavy favourite to win this one. But given her recent form troubles and injury woes, Victoria has got a good chance of causing an early upset and picking up some traction. Expect an entertaining match in this battle of generations.
