Camila Giorgi v Mayar Sherif Head to Head

Giorgi leads 1-0, having beaten Sherif as recently as the WTA Merida 2023 in straight sets.

Giorgi, Likely to be Challenged

Italy’s Camila Giorgi is starting in the Madrid Open at an unfavourable position.

Firstly, she has never made it past the second round of the tournament. This will only be her sixth appearance in Madrid, and the best she did was in 2016 when she made it past the opener. Secondly, this is Giorgi’s first clay event of the 2023 season.

To further complicate matters, the 31-year-old has never been at her best on clay courts; in the last three seasons, her combined record on the surface stands at 10-12.

Now ranked #40, Giorgi’s last appearance of the season was in Miami, where she fell to Victoria Azarenka in round two. While most of her season has been along these lines, she did win the title in Merida to put her present tally at 10-7.

Sherif, Seeking a Turnaround

By contrast, Mayar Sherif of Egypt is going to be in her element when she takes on the red courts.

She arrived in Spain with a record of 7-10 owing to a string of early exits in Merida, Indian Wells, Miami, Charleston, Lyon, Hobart, and Melbourne. However, a recent semifinal showing in ITF Oeiras did give her some momentum ahead of the WTA 1000 event.

Mayar was also a quarterfinalist in Monterrey – but that took a lot of doing with long affairs against Camila Osorio and Xinyu Wang.

The current World No. 59 has done well on clay in the past. Last year, she was 26-5 and the year before, 26-10 on the surface. Sherif’s sole two WTA finals have come on clay, and so have her four Challenger trophies between 2021 and 2022.

Giorgi v Sherif Prediction and Tip

For us, Sherif is the clear favourite here. Although Giorgi is capable of winning big and taking things by storm every now and then, it is likely to be a challenge for her to do so on clay. Meanwhile, Sherif is locked and loaded and well-primed to start strong in Madrid.
