Aryna Sabalenka v Sorana Cirstea Head to Head

Sabalenka and Cirstea have faced off once before this with the match having come at the 2023 Miami Open. Cirstea had won that in straight sets.

Sabalenka Returns from Stuttgart Final

A former winner at this competition, Sabalenka will now turn her focus towards the Madrid Open following a string of excellent results for the season.

Sabalenka will know she has done well on clay in the past and her real threat comes from the racquets of Iga Swiatek if and when they meet in the final. Before that, however, Sabalenka will need to get past tricky opponents like the one she faces in the second round.

Tricky why, you might ask?

Because Sabalenka has lost to Cirstea and on her favourite hardcourt surface in the past.

The good news for Sabalenka is she is coming off a decent workout at the Stuttgart Open last week where she overcame Barbora Krejcikova, Paula Badosa and Anastasia Potapova to make the final. And it was Swiatek who had beaten her there.

Can she shrug off the Miami loss as a one-off?

Cirstea Needs Three Sets against Davis

It took Cirstea effort and time but in the end, she managed to make it through her first round match against Lauren Davis. The Romanian overcame Davis in a shade over two hours with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory.

The first set looked to be going to script as Cirstea grabbed the one break of serve she needed to win it while not facing a single break-point. She then broke Davis in the very first game to raise hopes of an early finish but Davis broke right back and then again in the sixth game to level it out at 3-3.

Davis then stunned Cirstea with a third break of the set to forge ahead before serving things out to level the encounter.

The third set, however, saw Cirstea race away with breaks in the second and fourth game, clinching the match off the first break-point she got. In the process she has now made the second round here for the first time in four years.

Can she surprise Sabalenka again?

Sabalenka v Cirstea Prediction and Tip
