Diego Schwartzman v Hugo Grenier Head to Head

Schwartzman and Grenier have never faced off before this.

Schwartzman Continues to Struggle

A player who has formerly been ranked eighth in the world and won three titles on clay, Schwartzman has really had the rough end of the stick this season.

His overall win-loss record of 5-12 in 2023 is bad enough but for him to have won just two matches out of the nine that he’s played on red dirt is below-par for a top 100 player let alone one of his quality.

In fact both his wins on clay have come recently – at the Monte-Carlo Masters and the Barcelona Open – and both were followed by defeats to Jannik Sinner. Earlier in the season he had lost all five of his matches on clay, bowing out in the four tournaments on the South American swing and again in Estoril.

Can Schwartzman shrug that poor record for the season off and try and emulate what he had done the last three times in Madrid, i.e. reach the second round?

Grenier Hoping to Win His First Match on Clay

In a career that has seen Grenier hit a career-best ranking of 95th in the world, he has won just three main draw matches at the highest level. And there have been seven losses to go with that.

Making things worse for Grenier is his record on clay on the ATP circuit which has seen him play just twice in main draws of competitions and lose both of them.

What makes his qualification here rather surprising is Grenier had gone into both his pre-tournament matches as a second favourite. Against Lukas Klein, he was 6/4 coming into the encounter while starting 11/10 in the match against Daniel Rincon.

And while he needed three sets in both matches, Grenier found a way to scrape through to the main draw.

Can he now make it three in three wins against players who start out as favourites? There is that possibility given how poor Schwartzman has been this season.

Schwartzman v Grenier Prediction and Tip

Schwartzman will start off a favourite but a fighting Grenier could look to try and topple the Argentine here. A three-setter could be the result.
