Monteiro Sent Out in Munich Opener

Monteiro has a sterling overall record on clay for a player whose career-best ranking is 61st in the world but that hasn’t translated into anything spectacular this season.

The world number 97 did surprise the out of form Albert Ramos Vinolas in the Santiago opener and then overcame Marco Cecchinto in the second round there but that’s as far as his sparkle has gone.

That shine came off in the quarterfinal of that tournament and since then he has won just one match from three competitions. In his first clay court competition on the Euro swing in Munich, Monteiro was sent out in three sets by Yannick Hanfmann.

The good news for Monteiro amidst this doom and gloom is two-fold. For starters this is the first time he has made the main draw here in Madrid and secondly, he starts off against a qualifier which gives him a slight edge.

Mixed Fortunes on Clay for Gojo

Gojo enters the main draw on the back of successive straight-set wins in the qualifiers of this tournament. While he had no difficulties in overcoming Jan Choinski in the first qualifying round, his second qualifier against Zsombor Piros did have some sticky moments for Gojo.

In the end, Gojo shrugged off a difficult opening set to carve out a victory and entered the main draw.

Earlier this year, Gojo had featured in only a couple of clay court competitions and both came at the lower, Challenger level.

He started off with a runner-up trophy in Murcia in Spain but two days later, he was ousted in the very first round at the Madrid Challenger. He will hope for a better result at the Madrid Masters now.

Monteiro v Gojo Prediction and Tip

Monteiro could face some challenge but despite his form, could make it through to the next round in three sets.
