Blinkova Makes Madrid Debut

Blinkova is making her debut in Madrid, but apart from Cincinnati, where she has once made the last four, and another time the quarter-finals, she has a poor record in WTA 1000 events, especially on clay.

Her best result of the season so far was back in January, when she reached the semi-finals, but, since then, it has been a series of first and second round defeats in the tournaments she has entered.

This will be her third clay court tournament of the year so far.

She reached the second round in Charleston, but was then thrashed by Jessica Pegula, winning just two games in their match.

Subsequently she entered an ITF event in Portugal, but also lost at the second round stage, beaten by compatriot Erike Andreeva.

Spaniard Parrizas Diaz Forced to Qualify

Parrizas Diaz spent many years struggling to survive in the sport, beset by a lack of financial support and injury.

It was only as she approached her 30th birthday that she began to experience the sort of success that enabled her to break into the top 100, and win on the ITF tour,

Although the third round of the Australian Open was her best result of the year so far, she might have felt hard done by being forced to qualify for what is a home event for her, given that there were wildcards available.

However, she shrugged off any disappointment she may have felt by first beating the Greek number two, Despina Papamichail, and then the German Tamara Korpatsch, both in straight sets.

She reached the second round last year in her only previous appearance in this event.

Blinkova v Parrizas Diaz Prediction and Tip

Although Parrizas Diaz was forced to qualify for this match, greater familiarity with the conditions and the support of the local crowd should give her the edge over Blinkova who is not at her best on clay.
