Camila Osorio v Clara Burel Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, and the head to head record is one win each.

Osorio won on clay in St. Malo in 2020, but the following year, Burel was successful in qualifying for the Australian Open in Dubai.

Osorio Returns After Injury Lay-Off

A former winner of the girls’ singles at the US Open, Osorio first made a name for herself two years ago when she won her maiden WTA title on home soil in Colombia.

She has made two finals since then, but finished on the losing side each time.

Although this is her first time in Madrid, she did reach the second round in Rome last year.

Recently her world ranking has suffered after she was beaten in the first round in Monterrey after retiring from the match with injury, meaning that she was unable to defend the points she had earned the previous year.

It has taken her some time to recover from that injury, and this will be her first match since then.

That means there will likely be some ring rust.

Burel Qualifies for Madrid Debut

Burel really made her mark last year at the US Open, where she came through qualifying to knock out the reigning Wimbledon champion, Elena Rybakina, before losing in the third round.

Although she has yet to match such heroics this year, she did qualify for the Australian Open before exiting at the second round stage.

That is the same round as she reached in Lyon, her only other main tour event this year.

However, she has claimed her place against Osorio with two wins in the qualifying competition.

Her first, against the Slovak, world number 366, Kristina Kucova, was relatively routine.

However, she had to work harder to overcome the challenge of her next opponent, Viktoriya Tomova of Bulgaria, sweeping through the first set, before conceding the second.

Tomova, however, fell apart in the third set, and failed to win a single game.

Osorio v Burel Prediction and Tip

There must be question marks about the fitness of Osorio after her injury lay-off, and Burel will be looking to exploit any hesitancy on her part.

In theory, though, the surface should be more to the liking of the Colombian, so she can be considered the marginal favourite.
