Dayana Yastremska v Eugenie Bouchard Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 22 year old Ukrainian, and the Canadian, who is seven years older.

Yastremska Not Known for Clay Court Prowess

This will be the third time Yastremska has featured in the main draw of this event. She came through qualifying to make the first round in 2019 and went one stage further last year.

The Ukrainian is not known for her prowess on clay, although she did win an ITF tournament on the surface four years ago.

Her only previous main draw appearance on clay this season was in Bogota where she lost in the first round. She failed to get out of qualifying in Stuttgart.

But she avoided that fate in Madrid, although she enjoyed a slice of luck when her first round opponent Eva Lys of Germany was forced to quit midway through their match with injury.

There was nothing fortunate, though, about the way she brushed aside the challenge of the world number 92, Julia Grabher, conceding just three games to the Austrian.

Bouchard Needed Protected Ranking Even to Enter Qualifying

It has been nine years since Bouchard was ranked in the top five in the world, and reached the Wimbledon final.

Since then struggles with form and a series of injuries have seriously dented her career, and now she has to use her protected ranking even to enter the qualifying competition for a tournament like Madrid.

In her first match with the Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo, she was a set and a break up when, for once, it was her opponent who succumbed to an injury, and she had to retire from the match.

However, she had little difficulty in getting past her second round opponent, the American Elizabeth Mandlik, with the odd break in five giving her the first set, before cruising to victory in the second.

She did make the quarter-final in Madrid back in 2017.

Yastremska v Bouchard Prediction and Tip

If this were just based on world ranking alone, then Yastremska would start clear favourite.

Yet Bouchard has played at a much higher level in her time, and, if she can summon up the memories of that form, she can make the next round.
