Paolini, Looking for Better Fortunes

Italy’s Jasmine Paolini is hoping to turn things around in Madrid, where her chances of doing so are likely to be better than any other surface.

She is somewhat of a clay specialist, having spent a good portion of her career so far on red courts. She has had some success – notably the Challenger finals in Saint-Malo and Bol and 12 more in ITF events.

Unfortunately, she is yet to translate some of that for bigger tournaments; in Madrid, she has never won an opening match – be it in the main draw or qualifiers.

Paolini’s present record stands at 6-10, with her last tournament being the ITF Koper in Slovenia. She lost in round two to Kristina Dmitruk, who was then #228. Her best result, as it stands for the season, came in Lyon where she made it to the quarterfinals.

Frech Set to Debut in Madrid

Poland’s Magdalena Frech will make her Mutua Madrid Open main-draw debut on Wednesday when she takes on Paolini. The last time around, she was beaten in the opening qualifying match.

Frech was successful in clearing the qualifiers now, beating Olga Danilovic and Aliona Bolsova early in the week.

Unlike Paolini, the 25-year-old has not got a repository of silverware or big wins to tap into. She has three clay ITF titles – the last one coming in September 2021. A lack of experience may make things difficult for her – but she can take some solace from knowing her opponent is struggling too.

Magdalena, who is now 10-12, enjoyed some success in Indian Wells where, as a lucky loser and a surprise bye in the first round, she reached round three. Before that, she made it to round two in Indian Wells – again, despite losing in the prelims.

Frech v Paolini Prediction and Tip

Frech seems to have the blessings of lady luck, and perhaps, that may play some part when she meets Paolini as an underdog. The Italian has got a decent chance of winning this one – but she will need to dig deep.
