Arnaldi Rallies Past Fils

Matteo Arnaldi bounced back from a set down to beat Frenchman Arthur Fils 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to qualify for the main draw in Madrid for the first time in his career.

The 22-year-old Italian, who served 6 aces, was broken twice in the match, while he converted 5 of 7 break points to win the two-hour-plus contest.

With the win Arnaldi is now into the second straight ATP tournament. He had qualified for the Barcelona Open as well and there he reached the second round by beating Jaume Munar in the opener. But he couldn’t reach the third round with Dan Evans halting his run.

The world no. 105 had beaten Filip Misolic in straight sets on Monday in the first qualifying round.

Overall Arnaldi is 10-2 on clay this season and that includes the Murcia Challenger title he won earlier this month. He had also won the Tenerife-2 Challenger on hard court this year.

Yet to break into the top 100, Arnaldi will be hoping to put up a strong show in Madrid.

Paire Digs Deep Once Again

After scoring a comeback win over Italy’s Francesco Passaro in the first qualifying round on Monday, Benoit Paire dug deep for a second consecutive day on Tuesday, to rally past Japan’s Kaichi Uchida and move into the main draw in Madrid for the eighth time in his career.

Although it wasn’t as tough as the first qualifying round, where Paire had to save a match point in the second set, the Frenchman still needed over two hours to dispatch the Japanese 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Tuesday.

The world no. 161 has already struck 18 aces in the first two rounds combined.

The 33-year-old 3-time tour-level champion is 0-1 at the tour level this year, having failed to qualify for a number of tournaments. But he has won a hard court Challenger title in Puerto Vallarta. Overall he is 18-16 across levels this year. His best in Madrid was a round of 16 finish in 2017.

He is still looking for his first tour-level main draw win of the season. Will that happen on Wednesday?

Arnaldi v Paire Prediction and Tip

Although Paire is the experienced player in this contest, form favours Arnaldi in this contest. The Italian has been particularly good on clay and will be hoping to make a solid debut.
