Vondrousova Qualifies For the Main Draw

2019 French Open finalist Marketa Vondrousova made a resounding comeback in the second qualifying round on Tuesday to oust America’s Taylor Townsend and qualify for the main draw in Madrid for the second time in her career.

The left-handed Czech lost the first set in a closely contested tiebreak, but she made a string comeback in the contest and dropped just one more game in the entire match to score a 6-7 (7-9), 6-1, 6-0 victory in two hours and four minutes.

Vondrousova had beaten Sweden’s Mirjam Bjorklund 6-3, 6-1 in the first qualifying round on Monday.

The Czech player will be making her second appearance in Madrid. She had lost in the opening round on her debut in 2021.

This is the first time the world no. 80 is playing on clay this season. She has had a decent run on hard courts, reaching the round of 16 in Indian Wells and Miami and the quarterfinals in Adelaide. Her best this season was a run to the semifinals in the indoor hard court tournament in Linz.

The Olympic silver medallist is a good clay court player, but has played very little on the surface over the last two years. Can she start off with a win on Wednesday?

Bassols Ribera Handed a Wild Card

Spain’s Marina Bassols Ribera has been handed a wild card for the tournament. The 23-year-old is currently sitting on a career-high ranking of no. 119, which she achieved earlier this month on April 10.

Bassols Ribera has not won a main draw match at any level this year and she is currently on a four-match losing streak. The series of defeats began in the opening round in Monterrey, where she was playing as a lucky loser. The loss was followed by first qualifying round defeats in Indian Wells, Miami and Bogota.

The Spaniard had won both her qualifying round matches in Lyon and Linz but she lost in the main draw of both the tournaments.

On Wednesday, she will be playing in the main draw of a big tournament for the first time in her career. Can she make an impact with a strong showing?

Vondrousova v Bassols Ribera Prediction and Tip
