Emma Raducanu v Viktoriya Tomova Head to Head

They met once before at the ITF Sunderland final in 2020 and that match was won by Tomova.

Raducanu Looking to Climb Up the Rankings

It has been a stop-start season for Emma Raducanu so far. The Briton has been hampered by either injury or illness.

First it was an ankle injury that bothered her, then illness in the form of tonsillitis became the cause of her withdrawals. Once she was back, a wrist injury started affecting her performance.

Can the 2021 U.S. Open champion overcome these setbacks and produce a string result in Madrid? The 20-year-old played on a clay for the first time last season and finished with a decent 5-4 record on the surface. This year, she has already lost one in Stuttgart, but will hope to get off to a winning start in Madrid.

Raducanu brings a 5-5 season record into the tournament. Her best came in Indian Wells, where she made it to the Round of 16. However, she has not won a match since the third round win in that tournament. Swiatek beat her in the round of 16 and then she suffered back-to-back first round defeats in Miami and Stuttgart.

As a result she has fallen to no. 85 in the world. She will be eager to start her climb back up.

Tomova Is a Lucky Loser

World no. 73 Viktoriya Tomova couldn’t win her qualifying round match on Tuesday, but the Bulgarian still managed to find her way into the main draw as a lucky loser.

The 28-year-old Tomova had rebounded from a set down to beat Spain’s Leyre Romero Gormaz in three sets in the first qualifying round. In the second qualifying round against Clara Burel, Tomova got off to a flying start by winning the opening set 1-6, but the Frenchwoman made a resounding comeback to beat the Bulgarian 1-6, 6-3, 6-0.

It was Tomova’s first loss on clay this season. She featured in the ITF Zaragoza tournament this month and went al the way to clinch her 17th ITF title by beating Tereza Martincová in the final.

As a result Tomova has moved up top career-high ranking of no. 73 this month. She has a 6-1 record on clay and will be looking to improve that further.

This is the first time that Tomova is competing in Madrid. She brings an overall season record of 18-10 into the tournament. She has won just two first round matches on the tour this year and has not gone past the second round.

Raducanu v Tomova Prediction and Tip

Tomova has played a lot of tennis on clay, even though at the lower level, and nine of her 17 titles at that level have come on the surface. She is in good form as well at the moment. However, Raducanu is the one with the bigger reputation. But she lacks clay court experience and her form hasn’t been encouraging either. So expect a close contest between the two, with Raducanu edging out the Bulgarian in three.
