Andy Murray v Andrea Vavassori Head to Head

Murray and Vavassori haven’t played each other before this.

Murray Makes Slow Start on Clay

While there have been times in his career that he has been excellent on clay – the 2015 season where he ended 15-1 on this surface is a case in point – in more recent times, Murray hasn’t focussed a lot of his attention to the red dirt.

For instance, he didn’t play a single match on clay in 2018, 2019 and 2021 and just one in 2021. And even last year, after making the third round of the Madrid, he withdrew from the tournament and was ruled out for the rest of the clay court swing.

This time around, Murray has made a slow start.

He featured at the Monte-Carlo Masters for the first time since 2017 and was blown away by Alex de Minaur in the very first round. He won just four games in the encounter.

The good news here for Murray is the Brit will now open his campaign against a qualifier ranked 164th in the world, which should give him a better chance of sliding into his comfort zone.

Vavassori Comes Through from the Qualifiers

Two hard-fought wins is what Vavassori needed in the qualifiers to make it through to the main draw at Madrid.

In the first round, he overcame Otto Virtanen in three sets before edging past Felipe Meligeni Rodrigues Alves in the second.

He saved two set-points in the second set of that Meligeni Rodrigues Alves encounter and frittered away five match-points before finally coming through in straight sets to make it to the main draw on his debut.

Clay is Vavassori’s most preferred surface and that can be seen from the way he hasn’t featured on no other surface since the Australian Open. In fact that opening qualifying defeat at the season’s opening major was Vavassori’s only match on hardcourts.

Can he use his opponent’s lack of match-play on clay to his advantage here?

Murray v Vavassori Prediction and Tip

Murray will hold the edge because of his experience but it’s tough to predict how he might be feeling going into the clay courts of Madrid. We expect Vavassori to probably grab a set here.
