Amanda Anisimova v Arantxa Rus Head to Head

Anisimova and Rus haven’t faced off in a competitive match before this.

Anisimova Returns after a Month-Long Layoff

Anisimova has made a rather slow start to the season, having barely won a thing in all of 2023. After starting out with an opening round defeat at the Adelaide International, she lost in the qualifiers of the Adelaide International 2 before winning a round as a lucky loser there.

And Anisimova was then left in tears following her first round loss at the Australian Open, making her the first seeded player to lose in the tournament.

Following that loss, the American featured in Dubai where she won a match but since then she has won nothing. A second round defeat to Victoria Azarenka was followed by opening losses at both, the Indian Wells Open and the Miami Open in March.

Anisimova hasn’t played since then, coming into this tournament with no match practice in over five weeks and with her last match on clay having come at the French Open last year.

Can she turn things around for herself in Madrid where she was a quarterfinalist last season?

Rus Surprises Friedsam in Qualifiers

Ranked 107th in the world at the moment, Rus was forced to feature in the qualifiers as she tried to make it to the main draw of this tournament. And she has done a good job making it through.

Having featured in only one main draw match on the WTA circuit this season, Rus overcame Carlota Martinez Cirez in her opening qualifier before defeating pre-match favourite Anna-Lena Friedsam in the second. She didn’t drop a set on her way to the main draw.

Unfortunately for her, she hasn’t done too much more than that all season.

In fact the last time Rus won a match on the WTA circuit came in Parma in September last year, nearly seven months ago. With that being the case, and with Rus facing a higher quality opponent despite Anisimova’s obvious form issue, it would be a big coup for her to make it through here.

Anisimova v Rus Prediction and Tip

Anisimova could face rustiness as her only problem here but once she has shrugged that off, there might not be any looking back. Backing her to come through in two.
