Jelena Ostapenko v Linda Fruhvirtova Head to Head

Their one previous meeting came earlier this year in Dubai where Ostapenko routed Fruhvirtova 6-2, 6-0.

Ostapenko Hoping to Continue Solid Start to the Season

While almost all of Ostapenko’s successes have come in hardcourt competitions, she has the capability to turn the faucet on when it comes to clay as well. A French Open title is indicator enough for that.

Unfortunately for Ostapenko, her results on clay haven’t been the best since that tournament win in Roland-Garros.

And that continued this season too when she fell in the second round of the Charleston Open. After overpowering Emma Raducanu in the first round of that tournament, Ostapenko went down fighting to Ons Jabeur in the second there.

That is the kind of fight she would love to exhibit in Madrid too as she looks to, for starters, emulate her rather modest career-best showing here of making the round of 32 on two previous occasions.

Ostapenko has a tricky opponent here first up.

Fruhvirtova Quells the Volynets Challenge

Katie Volynets wasn’t quite the favourite going into her opener against Fruhvirtova but she was not too far behind at 11/10. And with the experience on her side, Volynets could have been a difficult first round opponent for the 17-year-old.

Fruhvirtova did face some late resistance but an hour and 44 minutes is all it took for the Czech teenager to come through and make it to the second round for the first time in this tournament. She won 6-3, 7-5.

What was interesting to note was she was broken twice in the match and both came in the first set. In the second, Fruhvirtova did not even face a break-point, and off the third break-point opportunity she got, the Czech had broken Volynets.

She served out for the match and converted her first match-point to make the second round in a rare result on clay for the world number 58.

Ostapenko v Fruhvirtova Prediction and Tip

Ostapenko is a favourite here for obvious reasons but she would do well not to take Fruhvirtova for granted. Because Fruhvirtova does have the game to take advantage of any such chinks and we might then end up seeing a different result from what the bookmakers are suggesting.
