Samsonova Routed in Only Clay Match of 2023

A semifinalist at the Stuttgart Open last season, Samsonova has proceeded to lose five successive matches on clay after that.

Iga Swiatek expectedly overcame her in the semifinal of that tournament but even that was a hard-fought loss and Samsonova would have considered herself a tad unlucky there.

For her to then go down in the first rounds of Madrid Open, Italian Open and French Open last year and start things off this season in Stuttgart with a straight-set loss to Barbora Krejcikova would have been surprising, if not concerning.

Overall, Samsonova is much more proficient on hardcourt surfaces than on clay but that’s not to say she hasn’t done too much on dirt. Can she repeat the Stuttgart Open success from last season though?

Zanevska Begins Clay with Kenin Drubbing

Ranked 75th in the world, Zanevska needed just 59 minutes to register a resounding win over Sofia Kenin in the first round. In doing so she opened up in her first ever appearance in this tournament with a victory.

Zanevska was off the blocks rather quickly as she broke Kenin three times in the first set and faced just one break-point in return. The set lasted a mere 23 minutes.

In the second, the Belgian player made it a fourth break in a row to go 2-0 up, and then broke Kenin yet again to serve for the match at 5-2. While Kenin showed she was still in it by breaking back in the eighth game, she dropped serve for the sixth time in the encounter to allow Zanevska an easy ride into round two.

This follows a rather poor start to the season for Zanevska, who had entered this tournament on the back of five successive defeats.

Can she take down Samsonova here?

Samsonova v Zanevska Prediction and Tip

Samsonova starts off a favourite but we won’t put it beyond Zanevska to cause a flutter here on clay. Tempting odds for a Zanevska win too.
