Jurij Rodionov v Zhizhen Zhang Head to Head

This will be their second meeting. Rodionov won their previous one in two sets in 2017.

Rodionov Qualifies with High Level

Jurij Rodionov had to play two qualifying matches to get through but the Austrian was able to put together a really solid level and get it done. He faced good players but proved better than both not losing a set in the whole qualifying tournament.

That’s a really good effort for a player that has been working hard on improving in the past few years. He’s very close to getting into the 100 he’ll likely do it later this year if he keeps playing at a solid level. The score is 19-10 this year and while the majority of those wins came indoors, clay can be a decent surface for him.

Madrid is particularly so because it plays somewhat differently than other clay surfaces. He has a decent serve and can play very attacking tennis which will work well in the Spanish capital.

Rodionov has had success on clay in the past holding a career 82-63 record on the surface. If he finds some good form here he could certainly advance past the first round.

Zhang Back On Clay

Zhang was able to make his way into the top 100 with his good player in recent years and much of that actually came on clay. He posted a very impressive 29-11 record on the surface last year and he’ll be glad to be back on it once more.

The Chinese player hasn’t had a spectacular year so far with only 8 wins and 14 defeats with his clay form being up and down as well. He’s only 3-3 but expect that to rise in the coming weeks as he gets more comfortable on the surface.

His play is quite well suited for it because he doesn’t play overly aggressive. He’s a patient player who is capable of hitting winners but he tends to patiently wait for a good spot to do it.

He also moves rather well around the court which will help him in Madrid where the balls fly very quickly. The serve is also very decent so he can use that to his advantage as well.

Rodionov v Zhang Prediction and Tip

This match will largely come down to who serves better and it has nothing to do with power. It’s mostly about placement because shorter balls will be punished by both so the one who gets more will likely win. I think it will be Zhang.
