Borna Coric v Hugo Gaston Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between Coric and Gaston.

Coric on a Five-Match Losing Streak

Having climbed up the ranking last year following a stunning Cincinnati Masters title win, Coric is now struggling to replicate that kind of success as he fell to a five-match losing streak coming into this tournament.

This began at the Dubai Open where Coric looked to have done well to reach the quarterfinal before Daniil Medvedev ended his stay. What’s followed has been an absolute carnage.

Coric has lost to Alex Molcan, Christopher Eubanks, Nicolas Jarry and Laslo Djere over his next four matches, leaving him with a lot of questions but does he have any answers?

And it’s not even like clay is Coric’s most favourite surface either. This year he has already been dumped out of the openers at the Monte-Carlo Masters and Banja Luka Open while last year he was 3-5 on clay.

Can he stall his losing streak and finally win one?

Gaston Sends Chardy Packing

It took Gaston a mere hour and 13 minutes to send Jeremy Chardy on his way as he sealed his first ever win at the Madrid Masters.

Gaston, who loves his time on clay but was coming off three successive losses on it, registered a 6-3, 6-4 win over Chardy to enter round two. This was despite Gaston dropping his serve twice in the encounter.

The first set was a bit of a breeze for Gaston who broke Chardy in the first and ninth game to grab it and then took a 3-0 lead in the second with a break of serve.

Chardy showed a late surge as they traded service breaks three games in a row but as he looked to serve to stay in the match at 4-5, Gaston broke him again to clinch the result in his favour.

Can Gaston now make things difficult for Coric?

Coric v Gaston Prediction and Tip

Gaston might not be a favourite here but given Coric’s form and his own love for clay, he would have a good chance here we think.
