Vekic Looking to Extend Excellent Year

Donna Vekic has had an incredible year so far winning a trophy and just playing really well so far. She has an 18-5 record so far and while she only played two matches on clay so far it’s just been impressive to see her returning to the level she had a few years ago.

Clay has been an interesting surface for Vekic over the years because it’s pretty clear that it’s not her favourite surface nor does she plays her best there but Madrid could offer the best of both worlds. Yes, it’s still clay but she has a really good serve that has bailed her out more than once this year.

That will be useful at this event and in the matchup against her next opponent. Her groundstrokes are pretty decent as well and if she can move at a decent level, Vekic could be a dangerous player here.

She is facing a native player that loves to play on clay and a player that has a heavy game. It’s a tricky matchup but I think the serve of the Croatian could prove the difference.

Masarova Endures Close R1 Match

Rebeka Masarova will have the advantage of having played a match in Madrid before this one. It was a tricky one that went to three sets but the Spaniard was able to keep her cool in the final set and close out the match.

That will certainly help her in this matchup because she’ll be more adapted to the conditions and courts however Vekic is tough out. They play quite similarly as both have a powerful serve and strong groundstrokes. The Spaniard actually to me has even more power in her game than Vekic.

She’s also far more well-suited for clay having played far more on it. The year generally has been very promising for her as she has a 21-8 record so far but not all of those matches were on the highest level of the WTA Tour.

They key for Masarova will be how she serves and how she handles the serve of Vekic. She will need to be really precise on her own serve and quite good at returning that of Vekic in order to give herself a good chance to win. Her clay experience should help her.

Vekic v Masarova Prediction and Tip

This is a very interesting matchup but I do think that Vekic has all the tools to win. Masarova could give her trouble which makes the over a good option but I think Vekic gets it done in the end.
