Haddad Maia Eyeing 2nd round

Beatriz Haddad Maia never made it to the second round of the Madrid Open and that’s quite odd because she generally fits on this type of court very well. She has a really solid serve and is quite tall which allows her to place the ball really well.

Her groundstrokes are really solid for this type of thin air but nobody really expected her to improve so dramatically last year. She was a player largely hovering around the top 100 but now she’s basically a top 20 talent.

Her year so far has been rather decent with a 14-9 record. She only played three matches on clay but showed a really solid level on a rather unique court in Stuttgart. Madrid should play somewhat similarly so she will have that added bonus.

Clay is generally a really good surface for her. She was 12-5 on the surface last year and 35-10 the year before. If she plays well this is a match she should win.

Andreeva Upsets Fernandez

15-year-old Mirra Andreeva earned her first win on the WTA 1000 series by beating former grand slam finalist Leylah Fernandez in two simple sets. Andreeva will turn 16 in a few days but the Russian has been on a spectacular tear this year. She is 14-0 after this but the majority of those wins came on the ITF Tour.

This was a pretty big win for the Russian who looked really comfortable in this match against Fernandez never losing her composure. Even when Fernandez made a big of a run late in the match she remained calm and finished it off.

The youngster showed a really good level serving well and hitting the ball cleanly as well. There were very few mistakes from her which was very positive to see.

She also read the match really well by allowing Fernandez to hit herself out of it. For a time she was simply pushing the ball back giving Fernandez all the time in the world to unleash but she could never control the ball and keep it in the court. If she can replicate that against Haddad Maia, she will be tricky to beat.

Haddad Maia v Andreeva Prediction and Tip

This match is a really interesting one and the odds show that Haddad Maia is only a slight favourite which is crazy considering that she’s playing a 15-year-old. Still, I think that the Brazilian will find a way to win though I could see this going to three sets.
