Diaz Starts Well

Nuria Parrizas Diaz of Spain is off to a solid start in Madrid, as she beat Anna Blinka 6-3, 6-0 in the first round. The win after her triumph in the qualifiers, where she had dismissed Despina Papamichail and Tamara Korpatsch in straight sets.

With these wins, the 31-year-old is 15-10 in 2023. In her last tournament in ITF Oeiras, Diaz had made it to the same exact stage as a qualifier before losing to Sara Sorribes Tormo 1-6, 4-6.

Except for similar results in Hobart and the Australian Open (where she recorded some impressive victories over Beatriz Haddad Maia and Anastasia Potapova), most of Nuria’s season has gone by in early exits.

Should Diaz win this match, she would have posted her best results in the Madrid Open. Of course, that is likely to be a tough task.

Kudermetova, Struggling with Form

Number 12 seed Veronika Kudermetova is struggling to win of late. She arrived in Madrid with a record of 10-9 and a four-match losing streak.

The 26-year-old Russian lost her opening-round bouts in Stuttgart, Charleston, and Miami to the likes of Coco Gauff, Marketa Vondrousova, and Diana Shnaider.

Kudermetova was in solid form in the first month when she made it to the closing stages in Adelaide, Abu Dhabi, and Doha. Those wins are currently helping her stay afloat in the top 15.

A formidable doubles player (current #5) and the reigning French Open quarterfinalist, Veronika is more than skilled to go deep in this WTA 1000 event. After all, she has decent experience on clay courts – in addition to 13 WTA doubles finals.

Kudermetova v Diaz Prediction and Tip

Diaz (current World No. 76) has the experience and some success – but nothing compared to Kudermetova. For this reason, she is the underdog here.

That said, the Russian has been vulnerable recently and there is no reason why Nuria cannot build on that. We may be looking at a long affair here.
