Jessica Pegula v Magdalena Frech Head to Head
Pegula leads 1-0, beating Frech last in the 2021 WTA Chicago.

Frech Upsets Paolini
World No. 100 Magdalena Frech is looking to turn things around in Madrid. So far, she has done well but the real test begins now.
Starting as a qualifier, she first defeated Olga Danilovic and Aliona Bolsova with some doing to reach the main draw. She then made her official debut in the Mutua Madrid Open, dispatching the Italian Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 6-3.
In contrast to Pegula, the 25-year-old doesn’t have an impressive collection of trophies or major victories to draw upon. Her record includes just three clay ITF titles (eight in total), with the most recent one dating back to September 2021.
Magdalena, with a season record of 11-12 now, had some success this year in Miami, reaching the third round as a lucky loser after receiving a bye in the first round. Before that in Indian Wells, she had made it to the second round in a similar fashion – despite losing in the preliminaries.

Pegula, Hoping for a Title Run
Last season, World No. 3 Jessica Pegula was a finalist in the Mutua Madrid Open, losing to Ons Jabeur in the final in three sets.
This season, she will hope to do it again and by the looks of it, she is in a good position. The 29-year-old American, who is enjoying a bye into round two, is starting from a position of strength. Her record at the moment is at an impressive 24-7.
Jessica’s highlights include a semifinal stint in Miami, Charleston, and Dubai, a runner-up feat in Doha, and an elite-eight appearance in the Australian Open.
With many wins against the top 10 players on the tour, Pegula is the flavour to beat in Madrid.
Pegula v Frech Prediction and Tip
This one is Pegula’s to lose. While the 29-year-old has lost some matches, it is hard to imagine that happening against Frech. The number three seed should breeze into the third round.
