Pera Won Two Clay Court Events Last Year

Pera enjoyed a first round bye courtesy of her seeding.

She has also been a semi-finalist in doubles at the French Open in the past.

Her last tournament was in Charleston, where she got to the third round before losing to Daria Kasatkina, the world number eight, in straight sets.

Maria Cruises Past Teenage Wildcard

It has taken Maria until the age of 35 to make her main draw debut in Madrid, but the late career renaissance that has seen her rise almost two hundred places up the world rankings in the last 18 months continues, as she ruthlessly dealt with the challenge of the Philippine wildcard Alexandra Eala.

The match began with the first three games going against serve. Eala had the chance to level things up when she held had three break points in the next Maria service game, but was punished by her failure to take any of them as the German won four games in a row to wrap up the set,

The teenager was broken again early in the second set, and another break gave Maria the chance to serve out which she duly took.

They had been on court barely more than an hour, and Maria had hardly had to exert herself.

.Pera v Sherif Prediction and Tip

Pera has proved that she has the game for clay, and it is now up to Maria to match her.

The German veteran is enjoying the late bloom to her career, but the American should have too much for her in this match.
