Casper Ruud v Matteo Arnaldi Head to Head

Ruud and Arnaldi have never faced off before in a competition match.

Ruud Hoping to Turn Things Around

It was never going to be easy for Ruud to replicate the kind of season he had had in 2022 but it’s been a real struggle for him this year.

Even on his favourite surface, clay, Ruud has a win-loss record of 6-2 for the season. On it’s own it’s not such a bad scoreline but defeats in the third round at both, the Monte-Carlo Masters and Barcelona Open would have added question-marks to the kind of year he was having before he switched to clay.

Ruud, who had lost six of his 11 matches in hardcourt competitions, then fell to Jan-Lennard Struff at Monte-Carlo while losing to Francisco Cerundolo in Barcelona.

His only spark came at Estoril where he staved off two three-setters to clinch the title but can he take that step up and start going deeper into a tournament of this quality? For starters, he will hope not to face too much trouble against his 105th-ranked opponent here.

Arnaldi Scrapes Past Paire

Benoit Paire was once a top-20 player but has now fallen to 161st in the world and struggles to make it to the main draws of tournaments. Which is why despite qualifying for this event, it was his opponent Arnaldi who started off as a 1/2 favourite to overcome Paire in their opener.

And overcome he did but not before Paire had given Arnaldi a scare.

The two-time Challenger winner for the season already, Arnaldi, was on court for two hours and saved one match-point in the final set tie-breaker before edging past his French opponent.

Arnaldi won 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (6) to set up this meeting with Ruud. This follows a Challenger title on the clay courts of Murcia and a second round appearance as a qualifier in Barcelona where he had stunned Jaume Munar in his opener.

Can he make a match out of it against the world number four?

Ruud v Arnaldi Prediction and Tip

Ruud might not be at his best but he should be good enough to come through here. And in straight sets too.
