Maria Sakkari v Arantxa Rus Head to Head

Maria Sakkari leads the head-to-head 4-0, but was pushed to three sets on the clay in Palermo last season.

Sakkari Bids to Win Second Career Title

Despite being a top 10 mainstay for a while now, Maria Sakkari hasn’t managed to lift a second career title. Her solitary WTA title did come on clay, but it’s almost four years since she emerged victorious from Rabat, Morocco.

Sakkari has been to a few finals including WTA 1000s, but she’s finished on the wrong side of the scoreline. The Greek has reached three semifinals this year, losing two of those in three sets, and perhaps disappointingly the one that got away being in Linz where she was the top seed.

Sakkari will not be one to dwell on near misses and failures. Still only 28, we’ve seen so many successful stories in the past to actually fathom a potential big-time moment in waiting for Sakkari.

Could it happen at the Madrid Open? Well, she doesn’t have a great record in this event, but part of that has to do with the harrowing draws she’s received down the years. At least on Thursday, there is a change for once. Let’s see if she can capitalize.

Rus Outplays Out-Of-Form Anisimova

Arantxa Rus outplayed and overwhelmed out-of-form American Amanda Anisimova. She came through in straight sets, winning 7-5 6-2 in an hour and 35 minutes.

Anisimova has won three matches all year and came to Madrid with a three-match losing streak weighing on her shoulders. And Rus, who was one the most in-form qualifiers she could draw, sensed the opportunity and knew how vulnerable her opponent was.

Anisimova had a turbulent afternoon picking her spots on serve. She served seven double faults and landed just 57% of first serves and won 53% of points. That gave Rus an opening to attack off the first shot in her return. The Dutch lefty broke Anisinmova’s serve five times from 13 chances.

Rus has now won all three matches this week right from qualifying in straight sets.

Sakkari v Rus Prediction and Tip

Rus has now won 12 of her past 14 matches on clay including Wednesday’s near-clinic against a struggling Anisimova. And having run Sakkari extremely close less than a year ago in Parma we think she offers great value in the sets market.
