Linette Chasing Maiden Main Draw Win In Madrid

It defies logic, but Magda Linette has yet to win a match at the Madrid Open. In fact, she’s only been to the main draw once in five preivous visits and lost in three sets to Saisai Zheng back in 2021.

In her other trips, she’s failed to scale the qualifying hurdle each time. The scenaio is a lot different this time, with Linette occuping a career high ranking of No. 19 and has evne had the luxuruy of getting a first-round bye.

But the wait for a first win in this tournament might extend for one more year after drawing Czech lefty Marketa Vondrousova. Linette has been woefully out of form since leaving Australia – the scene of her most glorious two weeks of her season.

With just one win in five matches, she is in a race against time to find some form before next month’s French open. She was last in action at the Billie Jean King Cup where she stepped up to fill Iga Swiatek’s shoes for her country but lost both singles rubbers against Kazakhstan.

Vondrousova Toppes Bassola Ribera

Marketa Vondrousova was perhaps the most dangeorus qualifier at this year’s Madrid Open, and she navigated her way into the main draw without facing too much resistnace depsite dropping a set to Taylor Townsend on Tuesday.

The former Roland Garros finalist made short work of her fisrt-round opponent Marina Bassols Ribera, taking just an hour and 15 minutes to round of a 6-1 6-3 win on Manolo Santana Stadium.

Vondrousova was superior and adept in almost every department, landing 69% first serves and only dropped her serve once in the match. Her second serve will defintely need some beefing up before her meeting against Linette, but overall, she’ll be pleased with her movement and point contruction.

She was able to break Bassols Ribera’s serve five time sin the match, with the Spaniard hardly even winning half of her first-serve points.

Linette v Vondrousova Prediction and Tip

Linette started her clay-court swing with a fine win over Varvara Gracheva but things have sonce gone downhill for the Polish No. 2. It’s been a while since we last saw Vondrousova grace the clay courts and it has to be said she is a joy to watch on this surface. She’s now unbeaten in five matches on the surface and with Linette seemingly out of touch since the start of April, the Czech is a strong favorite to advance.
