Tallon Griekspoor v Jaume Munar Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the Pune Open earlier this year. Griekspoor had won that opening round encounter.

Griekspoor on a Three-Match Losing Streak

After having made a sterling start to the season which saw Griekspoor win his maiden ATP title at the Pune Open, the Dutchman’s form has slowly but surely waned away.

Sure, he did make it to the third round at the Australian Open and was a semifinalist at the Rotterdam Open but since that time, Griekspoor has barely won anything.

Of the 11 matches that he has played since making that semifinal in Rotterdam, Griekspoor has lost seven. This includes three successive defeats coming into this second round match in Madrid, all of which came on clay.

And it’s not like Griekspoor doesn’t do well on clay. He has a 42% win record on this surface, which is only marginally lower than his win percentage in hardcourt tournaments. Which is why while he hasn’t won too much recently, he will know he can turn things around once he gets his rhythm going, even on clay.

Munar Stalls Kokkinakis

It took Munar two hours and 39 minutes in the end but he found a way past his Australian opponent Thanasi Kokkinakis in his opening round match here. In doing so, Munar had registered his maiden win in Madrid.

Munar endured eight aces from Kokkinakis and was broken three times in the match before coming through 7-6 (7), 7-6 (3). Of this, he faced a set-point in the opening set, and was down 5-3 in the second when Kokkinakis got himself another set-point.

Both were saved by Munar who then went on to clinch the ensuing tie-breaker.

This follows a modest showing from Munar on clay this season with the Spaniard having reached the semifinal in Santiago but generally struggled to make it past the second round at other tournaments.

Can he take advantage of Griekspoor’s recent issues?

Griekspoor v Munar Prediction and Tip

Not much to choose between the two and it could well be down to who can get quickly off the blocks. We could be looking at a three-setter here.
