Karen Khachanov v Thiago Monteiro Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings between these two players and Khachanov has won every single time. All three matches were played on different surfaces.

Khachanov 3-2 on Clay This Season

While clay is not his most preferred surface, Khachanov’s overall record on this surface isn’t the worst around. And even this year, despite winning three and losing two of his matches in clay-court competitions, the Russian has defeated some challenging opponents already.

In the first couple of rounds at Monte-Carlo, Khachanov overcame Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Ilya Ivashka to reach the third round before falling to the eventual champion Andrey Rublev.

Khachanov then found himself facing Nicolas Jarry in his opener, an opponent who knows his way around clay but Dan Evans got the better of him in the next match.

Overall, Khachanov’s record at the Madrid Masters isn’t the best though. He has featured in five editions here and won just one match and that’s something he would like to get past. The trouble is Khachanov’s defeats in this tournament have come to players who haven’t done too well against him otherwise.

Monteiro Edges Past Gojo

While Monteiro plays most of his tennis on clay, he has barely gotten moving on this surface this season.

Which is why he started out at 10/11 odds in his opening round match against Borna Gojo and lived up to those too. Monteiro needed two hours and 16 minutes and needed to save two set-points in the first set before coming through in three.

In a match where both players dropped their serve just once, it was that opening set tie-breaker which separated the two players.

Monteiro, who had lost to Yannick Hanfmann in the Munich opener last week, scraped through 11-9 in that tie-breaker before clinching the match 4-6, 6-3.

Can he now put up a strong showing against his Russian opponent in round two?

Khachanov v Monteiro Prediction and Tip

Khachanov’s clay court court form and his opponent’s preference for this surface could make for an interesting contrast and that’s where this match could get close. Which is also why we think at 1/4, Khachanov is too short. Expecting this to spill over to a third set.
