Korda Back in Action After Being Sidelined for Three Months

The last time Sebastian Korda was involved in a professional match it was in January during the quarterfinal of the Australian Open. Playing against Russia’s Karen Khachanov, Korda suffered a wrist injury which sidelined him for three months.

The American returns to action on Thursday in the second round of the Madrid Open, where he is seeded no. 22.

Before the injury, Korda had got off to a flying start in 2023 and an 8-2 record from two tournaments is a testament of that. Korda finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic in Adelaide and then made it to his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal in Melbourne, only to withdraw from the contest while trailing the Russian 6-7, 3-6, 0-3.

Korda is making his second appearance in Madrid. Last year, the 22-year-old beat Reilly Opelka in the opener but fell to Lorenzo Musetti in the second round.

He is a decent clay court player and will look to find form quickly on his return.

Grenier Knocks Out Schwartzman

Qualifier Hugo Grenier stunned Diego Schwartzman in the first round of the Madrid Open on Wednesday. It was the Frenchman’s first ever main draw match at a Masters 1000 tournament and he began with a win, needing two hours to dispatch the world no. 72, 7-5, 6-4.

Grenier served 8 aces, saved 6 of 8 break points and converted 4 of 9 to march into the next round.

The world no. 128 had qualified for the main draw with back-to-back three-set victories. First, he came back from a set down to beat Lukáš Klein and then he eld off a comeback effort from Daniel Rincon, defeating the Spaniard in three sets in the second qualifying round.

Grenier improved to 14-13 overall this season. He had won his fourth Challenger title in Las Franquesas Del Valles, Spain earlier this season.

Can he keep his stunning run going in the next round?

Korda v Grenier Prediction and Tip

Korda will be rusty, but he will look to pickup from where he left. He is seen as someone with great potential and there will be huge expectations from him. Grenier is in good form and the win over the Argentine would have given him a lot of confidence. So expect him to put up a fight, but Korda should edge past him.
