Bautsita Agut Struggling In 2023

Roberto Bautista Agut had reached the semifinals on his Madrid debut in 2014. Since the the Spaniard has struggled to even reach the last 16. On Thursday he will begin his ninth campaign at the Masters 1000 tournament.

Seeded no. 20, Bautista Agut had a first round bye. He had a very good start to the season but has gone off the boil ever since the tour moved out of Australia.

The world no. 25 will be aiming to return to form in Madrid but has a tough opener against a player who knocked him out in his first match in Estoril earlier this month. Can he get his revenge over Halys? The 35-year-old has lots of experience behind him and has won 11 titles from 22 ATP finals, three of those finals were on clay and he succeeded in claiming two of those titles.

Bautista Agut is however 2-3 on clay this year and he is 10-11 overall in 2023. His best this season was a runner-up finish in Adelaide-2 and he also made it to the fourth round of the Australian Open.

He will be concerned about his current form, but given his class, one good game can turn things around once again.

Halys wasn’t broken again in the match though, while he won the next two sets in identical manner by breaking the world no. 75 in the last game (10th game) of each set.

Halys served 13 aces and 35 winners in the match. He also saved 5 of 6 break points and converted half of the four that he held to complete a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory in just under two hours.

The win improved Halys to 12-11 on the tour and 17-14 across levels this year. He was a semifinalist in Estoril and a quarterfinalist in Auckland and Montpellier.

Having got off to a good start, it will be interesting to see if he can build on it. Can he make it 2-0 against Bautista Agut?
