Yoshihito Nishioka v Alex Molcan Head to Head

Molcan came out on top during their only meeting at the Miami Masters earlier this year.

Nishioka Searching for Consistency

World no. 34 Yoshihito Nishioka will be playing in Madrid for the second time in his career.

In 2021, he made his tournament debut and won the first round before losing in the round of 64. The left-hander had a pretty good start to the season, but has lost a bit form in the recent tournaments.

Last week, he entered the Barcelona Open on the back of four successive defeats, but he snapped the losing streak by winning his season opener on clay against David Goffin. However, Nishioka was stopped by Jannik Sinner in the round of 16.

Earlier this year, the Japanese had made it to the semifinals in Adelaide and the fourth round of the Australian Open.

A two-time champion from four career finals, Nishioka has a career record of 11-20 on clay at the tour level. So clearly the surface isn’t his favourite and he may face challenges against Molcan on Thursday.

Molcan Makes a Fine Start

Alex Molcan carried his Banja Luka form to Madrid as the Slovak Republic player knocked out China’s Wu Yibing in straight sets in the opening round on Wednesday.

In a one-hour-and-22-minute contest, Molcan was not broken by the world no. 57 as he saved all five of the break points that he faced in the contest.

In contrast, the world no. 58 held nine breaking opportunities in the match and he capitalised on three of those chances to complete a 6-2, 6-4 victory. The win improved the 25-year-old to 10-9 this season, which includes a 5-3 record on clay.

Molcan had made it to the semifinals in Banja Luka last week, but he couldn’t reach a fourth career final after going down to Andrey Rublev. All of Molcan’s three previous finals have come on clay. But he is yet to win a tour-level title.

This is Molcan’s first main draw appearance in Madrid and he will be hoping to make a deep run.

Nishioka v Molcan Prediction and Tip

Molcan is the more accomplished clay court player. He is currently in very good form and has also defeated Nishioka earlier this year. So all these factors make him the favourite in this contest.
