Frances Tiafoe v Tomas Etcheverry Head to Head

These two have faced off once before this and that came as recently as earlier this month in the Houston Open final where Tiafoe clinched a hard-fought title win.

Tiafoe Knocked Out in Barcelona Opener

It’s been Tiafoe’s best results this early in the season and that has seen him climb up to 11th in the world – his career-best ranking.

The American has began with a title win at the team event, United Cup, where he won all five of his singles matches and would later make the semifinal at the Indian Wells Masters as well.

And then switching over to the clay courts of Houston, Tiafoe defeated Etcheverry in the final to win the title there. He didn’t drop a set all tournament.

Which is why it was a bit surprising to see Tiafoe fall at his very first hurdle at the Barcelona Open, losing to Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round. He had gone into that encounter as a 11/20 favourite.

Can he now overcome Etcheverry for the second time in a row?

Etcheverry Routs Mannarino

It has been a season to remember for Etcheverry with the Argentine having climbed up to his career-best ranking of 59th in the world at the moment.

And this was after he had started off the year at 79th and being 131st early last season.

Etcheverry’s ascent has been down to his performances on clay. He got the ball rolling with a quarterfinal appearance at the Buenos Aires Open and then made the final in Santiago.

At the very next tournament on clay, Etcheverry entered another final where he lost to Tiafoe, before crushing Adrian Mannarino in the opener here. He won 6-4, 6-0 to enter the second round in his maiden appearance in Madrid.

Can he put up a fight against Tiafoe?

Tiafoe v Etcheverry Prediction and Tip

What was on display the last time they played was the narrow margins between these two and that’s why it’s tough to pick a winner here. Especially not at those short odds for Tiafoe.
