Stefanos Tsitsipas v Dominic Thiem Head to Head

There have been eight previous meetings between these two players and Thiem actually leads 5-3. The last of these matches, however, came in 2020, following which Thiem struggled to get going.

Tsitsipas is a Former Finalist

Tsitsipas has had a good time on clay all his career and he enters this year’s Madrid Masters having made the final of this tournament once and finishing a semifinalist on another occasion (last year).

Even this year, while Tsitsipas fell in the quarterfinal of the Monte-Carlo Masters – losing to Taylor Fritz despite starting out a 1/3 favourite – he followed that up with a brilliant showing at the Barcelona Open.

It took the classiness of Carlos Alcaraz to take down the might of Tsitsipas in the final but not before the Greek number one had beaten Pedro Cachin, Denis Shapovalov, Alex de Minaur and Lorenzo Musetti before that.

Now up against a former nemesis, this will be a good time for Tsitsipas to get one back. He has the form going for him and quite frankly, Thiem has struggled for most part against players ranked and pedigreed lower than Tsitsipas.

Thiem Steady on European Clay

For the first time in ages, Thiem has shown the kind of consistency that would expect from a player like him. Sure, he no longer has that sparkle that once made him a top-10 to fear but even then the manner in which he had been losing matches earlier was beginning to get worrying.

Now, having made the quarterfinal at both, the Estoril Open and Munich Open this season, Thiem defeated Kyle Edmund in straight sets to enter the second round here.

Thiem was on court for an hour and 24 minutes as he notched up a 6-4, 6-1 victory over his British opponent.

The first set was a battle of nerves, with neither player looking to give an inch. It was Thiem who faced the first break-point of the set – two of them – but saved them and then broke Edmund off the first chance he got in the ninth game. He served it out to 15 to win the set.

And the Austrian then ran away by winning six games in a row, breaking Edmund thrice to seal his second round berth.

Tsitsipas v Thiem Prediction and Tip

Tsitsipas should come away a straightforward – and a straight-set winner – with Thiem showing some fight in one of those sets but being unable to continue.
