Denis Shapovalov v Zhang Zhizhen Head to Head

Shapovalov and Zhizhen have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Shapovalov Has Had a Mediocre Run in 2023

It’s been a forgettable season for Shapovalov with the 2018 Madrid Masters semifinalist having won only seven matches to go with his eight defeats.

The problem for Shapovalov has been his inability to stitch together two successive wins all season. In fact since making the quarterfinal at the Adelaide International and the third round of the Australian Open, he has gone six tournaments without winning successive matches.

And the transition to clay wasn’t quite joyous for Shapovalov either.

In his first – and only – tournament on clay this season, the Canadian came through in his Barcelona opener against Jozef Kovalik only to trip up against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the next.

Shapovalov does have a better chance here against a player who has never been ranked in the top 90.

Zhizhen Surprises Rodionov

Zhizhen Zhang hadn’t won a single main draw match all season and was an 11/10 underdog coming into his opener against Jurij Rodionov. A fine mix of defensiveness and talent helped Zhizhen overcome his opponent in straight sets.

In a match that lasted an hour and 33 minutes, Zhang registered just his third career win on clay and first in an ATP main draw match.

Zhang saved a set-point in the first set to win it in a tie-breaker while breaking his opponent in the fifth game of the second set to clinch the 7-6 (6), 6-4 victory.

He had come into this tournament with three opening round losses at the highest level this season, having gone down in the first round of the Australian Open, Indian Wells Masters and Houston Open. In a lot of ways this would be a joyous occasion for him but coming up against Shapovalov will test him to the fullest here.

Shapovalov v Zhizhen Prediction and Tip

Shapovalov’s form hasn’t been the brightest but even that being the case, he shouldn’t face a lot of issues against Zhizhen in his second round encounter.
