Tommy Paul v Roman Safiullin Head to Head
This will be the first meeting between Paul and Safiullin.

Paul Hoping for a Better Start at Madrid
While Paul has had a season to remember otherwise, he did not have the greatest of starts to the clay court swing when he took to court at the Houston Open earlier this month.
Paul, who broke into the top 20 of the rankings for the first time in his career earlier this year thanks to his performances at the Australian Open and Acapulco Open, crashed out of the Houston Open in the very first round.
He was roundly beaten by the 17/10 odds underdog Yannick Hanfmann, lasting just two sets against him.
And this follows a very similar season he had last year on clay. Paul, who featured in six tournaments on dirt in 2022, managed to win just two main draw matches, crashing out in the first round in four of those tournaments including the Madrid Masters and the French Open.
This time around he had a first round bye and faces a player who himself isn’t the most proficient on this surface. Can he turn things around?

Qualifier Safiullin Shocks Jarry
Nicolas Jarry has had a good season on clay and there was no surprise when he started off a 7/20 favourite coming up against Safiullin in their opening round encounter.
Safiullin had come into this tournament with a qualifying defeat at the Monte-Carlo Masters and a first round loss in Banja Luka before this. Which is also why he was the second favourite even in the qualifiers here, especially against Sebastian Ofner.
He came through in straight sets against Ofner before stunning Jarry 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the first round here to win his first ever match on the ATP Masters 1000 circuit.
What Safiullin will hope for is a bit of rustiness and little complacency from Paul as he looks to make it two shocks in a row.
Paul v Safiullin Prediction and Tip
Paul might not be the best on clay but we reckon he should not have a lot of worries in this one and make the third round for the first time here.
