Sakkari Off to a Good Start

World No. 9 Maria Sakkari started well in Madrid, beating Arantxa Rus 6-4, 6-4. With this, she is now 16-8 in 2023.

It has been a mixed season for the Greek. Her semifinal appearances in Linz, Doha, and Indian Wells were undone by her early exits in Miami, Charleston, and Dubai. In Sakkari’s defence, she did lose to some heavyweights like Karolina Pliskova and Bianca Andreescu.

Interestingly, Maria has not won a singles title since May 2019 – but her impeccable consistency in reaching closing rounds has helped her crack the top 10. Last March, she peaked at the #3 spot in the singles ranking.

The 27-year-old has also got a fair bit of clay experience – notably late-stage stints in the Italian Open. However, in Madrid 1000, she is yet to move past round three.

Masarova Carves Vekic Upset

Rebeka Masarova of Spain is enjoying a breakthrough run in Spain as she defeated the resurgent Croat Donna Vekic 6-1, 7-6(5) in round two. That win was preceded by a three-set slogfest against Cristina Bucsa in the opener.

The current World No. 74 is now 22-8 this year (6-1 on clay). She has been hard at work; just last week, she was a finalist in ITF Oeiras.

A runner-up in ASB Classic 2023, Masarova’s other events have not been this exciting. Starting as a qualifier in most cases, she made it to the main round a few times but could not get past the early matches.

The 23-year-old fancies clay courts. As a Junior French Open champion, Rebeka is a formidable adversary.

Sakkari v Masarova Prediction and Tip

Sakkari is the heavy odds-on favourite here, but as we know, upsets can happen. Whether it will be at the hands of Masarova is a whole other matter. This match is one-sided for the time being, with the Greek pegged to win this in straight sets.
