Jelena Ostapenko v Liudmila Samsonova Head to Head

Ostapenko leads 2-0, last beating Liudmila in the 2021 Luxembourg Open semifinal.

Samsonova beats Zanevska

Liudmila Samsonova of Russia, seeded #14, enjoyed a bye into round two. She began her campaign with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Maryna Zanevska – needing just 90 minutes to win the match.

This is only her second time competing in the Mutua Madrid Open – and has already posted her best results so far in the competition.

Now ranked World No. 18, Samsonova has had a slow start to the season. To put things in perspective, she closed last year at 30-17 and the year before at 39-22. At the moment, she is 9-9.

Her best result was the runner-up feat in WTA Abu Dhabi – where she had beaten Barbora Krejcikova, Veronika Kudermetova, and Qinwen Zheng. But then, in Charleston, she lost to Krejcikova, while in Miami, she was beaten by Zheng in round three.

Clearly, Liudmila has consistency issues but lucky for her, so does her opponent.

Ostapenko Schools Fruhvirtova

Number 19 seed Jelena Ostapenko beat Linda Fruhvirtova 6-0, 6-3 to start her campaign.

This is a tournament where the Latvian has performed pretty well in the past – at least on the doubles side. She is a three-time semifinalist who is now looking to emulate similar results in the singles draw. For what it is worth, like Samsonova, she just recorded her best stats by reaching round three in the tournament.

She is also a French Open champion and Charleston Open runner-up – but this was back in 2017. Since then, Ostapenko has not had a similar clay season; the 25-year-old has not won more than five clay matches in any year thereafter.

Currently, Jelena is 14-9 in 2023 – with the highlight being her quarterfinal showing in the Australian Open and a few round-of-16 stints.

Ostapenko v Samsonova Prediction and Tip

This match can go either way. Samsonova will look to avoid another defeat – and it is not an impossible feat. Given the rich experience and overall form of two players, expect an entertaining affair.
