Paula Badosa v Coco Gauff Head to Head

Badosa leads 2-1, last beating Gauff in the 2022 San Jose quarterfinal in straight sets.

Badosa Survives Cocciaretto

Paula Badosa found herself in quite a tussle in her opening match amidst a cheering home crowd. Playing Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto, it took the Spaniard two and a half hours to win 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

She has now improved her record to 12-6 but owing to a lack of big wins, the former world number two has fallen down to the 42nd spot in the rankings.

That said, Badosa is on a resurgent path on clay – having reached the quarterfinal in Charleston and Stuttgart. Moreover, as a semifinalist in Madrid in 2021, the 25-year-old has also got some history on her side.

Of course, if she were up against someone not of the same calibre as Gauff, she’d be starting as the favourite. But things are different – Paula has struggled often this season, with all defeats coming at the hands of players ranked inside the top 15.

Gauff, Continues to Impress

19-year-old Coco Gauff, current World No. 6, has improved her record to 17-6 in 2023. This came after a 6-4, 6-1 win over Irene Burillo Escorihuela in Madrid.

The current French Open finalist is a formidable adversary on any surface – especially on clay. She is also a phenomenal doubles player, given her current ranking of World No. 4 and titles from Doha and Miami.

Admittedly, Gauff did lose early in Stuttgart and Miami – both to Anastasia Potapova. Before that, she was a quarterfinalist in Indian Wells and semifinalist in Dubai.

With four singles and 11 doubles finals on the WTA Tour, Coco has left no stone unturned in making a name for herself – and she is just getting started. Having beaten many big names already, there is no doubting that she can do it again.

Gauff v Badosa Prediction and Tip

This match is going to be a thrilling one. Badosa has the home advantage, while Gauff is roaring with form and confidence. Expect many games.
