Daniel Evans v Bernabe Zapata Miralles Head to Head

This will be a first meeting between them.

Evans Has Found His Form on Clay

No. 19 seed Daniel Evans will begin his Madrid campaign in the second round on Saturday. The British player is playing in the tournament for the fourth time. He had reached back-to-back last 16 finishes in 2021 and 2022 and those two performances remain his best on Madrid. He will be looking to either match or better that this year.

And he is decent form at the moment. Evans has reached two semifinals this year and both came on clay this month. First he made it to the final four in Marrakech and then he reached the semifinal in Barcelona. But he failed to reach the final in both the tournaments. He went down to Roberto Carballes Baena in Morocco and to Carlos Alcaraz in Barcelona.

But despite those setbacks he will feel happy to have got into a rhythm on clay after an unimpressive 3-8 start to the season on hard courts.

Evans plays his best tennis on hard courts, while he has had little success on clay over the years. A 19-29 career record on the surface is a proof of that. But this year has been a bit different for him so far. He has a 5-4 record on clay and will be hoping to extend that in Madrid.

Zapata Miralles Saves Two MPs To Advance

A determined Bernabe Zapata Miralles came back from a set down, saved two match points in the final set, and then sealed the match in the final set tiebreak to knock out a visibly frustrated Mackenzie McDonald in a cracking first round contest on Thursday.

This is the first time that Zapata Miralles is competing in the main draw of the Madrid Masters and he has already made an impact in the tournament.

Ranked no. 42 in the world, Zapata Miralles is playing his best tennis this season. He reached his first two ATP career semifinals in Buenos Aires and Rio and made it to the last eight in Estoril. A clay court specialist, the 26-year-old is 11-11 overall, including a qualifying round defeat. All 11 of those wins have come on clay, where he has an 11-6 record.

Against McDonald, Zapata Miralles faced a match point on his serve at 30-40 in the 10th game of the final set. He saved it and then another two points later to stay in the contest.

Can he keep his winning form going in the second round?

Evans v Zapata Miralles Prediction and Tip

Given how Zapata Miralles has played this year, he will be a tough player to beat for the seeded Evans. Also, Evans is playing well on clay this season, while the Spaniard has played majority of his career matches on clay and has won four Challenger and six ITF titles on the surfaces. Expect a good contest with Zapata Miralles taking down the 19th seed.
