Felix Auger-Aliassime v Dusan Lajovic Head to Head

Lajovic leads the rivalry 2-0. He won at the ATP Cup in 2020 and at the Canadian Masters in 2021.

Auger-Aliassime Returning From Knee Injury

Seventh seed Felix Auger-Aliassime is coming off an injury break. The Canadian has not played since his third round exit from the Miami Open. Auger-Aliassime had pulled out of the Monte-Carlos Open due to a left knee injury. He has recovered from the injury now and is all set to play his first clay court tournament of the year.

This is the fourth time that Auger-Aliassime will be playing in the main draw in Madrid. He lost in the second round in 2019 and in the first round in 2021. His best in the tournament, however, came in 2022, when he went on to reach the quarterfinal before falling to Alexander Zverev.

Ranked number ninth in the world, the 22-year-old is 12-7 this season. His best this year was a semifinal finish in Doha and he was a quarterfinalist in Rotterdam and Indian Wells.

A four-time champion from 13 finals, Auger-Aliassime hasn’t had the best of the starts in 2023, but will be looking to produce good results in Madrid.

Lajovic Breezes Past Kubler

Dusan Lajovic extended his current winning streak to six matches as the Serbian knocked out Asutralia’s Jason Kubler in straight sets on Thursday.

The 32-year-old, who claimed his second career title by beating Andrey Rublev in the final of the Srpska Open last week, needed just an hour and 22 minutes to dispatch the Aussie 6-3, 6-3.

Lajovic did not face a single break point in the match and he converted half of the six that he held to move into the second round in Madrid for the third time in his fifth attempt. His best came on his debut in 2018, when he had made it to the last eight.

Lajovic has been in terrific form this season, particularly on clay, where he has a 16-6 record, including qualifying rounds.

As a result of his solid performances, he has moved up 40 places since the start of the season to no. 40 this week. After a strong start in the Spanish capital, can he keep the momentum going?

Auger-Aliassime v Lajovic Prediction and Tip

Lajovic has a 2-0 record from their past meetings, he is also in terrific form at the moment, having played a lot more than the Canadian on clay this year. In contrast, this will be Auger-Aliassime’s first clay court match of the season; he is also returning from injury, so he might be a bit rusty.

So although Auger-Aliassime has been the better player in recent times, he will be wary of Lajovic’s form. Expect a three-setter with the Canadian edging into the next round.
