Taylor Fritz v Christopher O’Connell Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between Fritz and O’Connell.

Fritz 5-2 on Clay This Season

Fritz enters this tournament on the back of two solid performances on clay but he would think he could have done a lot better.

For instance, at the Monte-Carlo Masters, Fritz registered wins over Stan Wawrinka, Jiri Lehecka and Stefanos Tsitsipas, all of whom are tricky opponents in their own – more so Tsitsipas – and even took the first set off Andrey Rublev in their semifinal.

Unfortunately for him that’s where his journey ended.

He came into the Munich Open with a lot more confidence on dirt and made it past Marton Fucsovics and Dominic Thiem, only to lose to Botic van de Zandschulo in the semifinals.

What this is seemingly telling us is Fritz has slowly making it count on clay but he is still some way off being at his best on it.

O’Connell Registers Tough Win over Krajinovic

Filip Krajinovic was 11/10 going into his opening round match against O’Connell and for most part of the encounter he managed to live up to those odds too. Fortunately for O’Connell he was able to run away in the deciding set to register a three-set win on his Madrid debut.

O’Connell was on court for two hours and 22 minutes grinding out a 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-2 victory.

There were a whopping 24 break-points in the encounter, of which O’Connell had 19. He broke his opponent six times, which meant the three times he lost his own serve was drowned by his opponent’s serving issues.

This result follows a quarterfinal appearance at the Marrakesh and a semifinal showing in Munich, which sums up a solid season for O’Connell on clay. Can he go one better by overcoming a player of the stature of Fritz?

Fritz v O’Connell Prediction and Tip

We will have to back Fritz here but with a caveat that O’Connell has been doing well and has beaten Alexander Zverev recently. We could see a fighting tussle as a result.
