Shelton Hoping to Shrug off Inconsistent Form

When Shelton made it to the quarterfinal of the Australian Open earlier this, it was a result that had come against the run of play. It also helped him break into the top 40 soon after that.

Since then, however, Shelton has struggled to keep up the momentum and it’s safe to say he hasn’t found the results to his liking.

Sure he is still very young in his career and the pressure of expectations is sometimes quite difficult to handle without a lot of experience but Shelton would be disappointed with his three wins from 11 matches following his entry into the last eight stage at the season’s first major.

This includes a 2-3 record on clay but to be fair to him he has lost to players who are either high quality or know their way around a clay court. Or both.

Like Dominic Thiem, Grigor Dimitrov and Casper Ruud.

Can he get past a player who has made the second round as a lucky loser?

Struff Rides His Luck

One’s often heard that fortune favours those who deserve it and by the looks of things Struff seems to be one of those right now.

The German, who had been knocked out of the qualifiers of this tournament, made the main draw a a lucky loser and has now made it to the second round too with a straight-set win over his opening round opponent.

Struff was on court for a mere hour and a quarter in his 6-3, 6-1 rout of Lorenzo Sonego, who had gone into the match as an 8/11 favourite. This follows Struff’s stunning run through to the quarterfinal of the Monte-Carlo Masters earlier this month, again having started off as a qualifier.

He had defeated Albert Ramos-Vinolas, Alex de Minaur and Casper Ruud on his way through, which gives him the confidence he can deal with a player ranked 39th and not the best on clay.

Shelton v Struff Prediction and Tip

Struff is a huge favourite here, starting out at 2/5 to win this as compared to a 2/1 for a Shelton victory. Backing Struff to win this.
