Elise Mertens v Jule Niemeier Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 27 year old Belgian, and the German, who is four years younger.

Mertens Ease Past Canadian

Mertens’ best performance in Madrid came back in 2021 when she reached the quarter-finals here, and the Belgian, who was given a first round bye, will be hoping for another deep run in this competition.

Certainly she dealt with the challenge posed by her second round opponent, Rebecca Marino of Canada, the world number 79, with relative ease.

Marino began the match badly, dropped her serve in the opening game, and soon found herself two breaks down. She recovered one of the breaks but could not prevent Mertens taking the set with her third set point opportunity.

The Canadian gave herself brief hope when she broke Mertens in the opening game of the second set. But the Belgian then reeled off six games in a row to bring proceedings to an end.

Niemeier Knocks Out Tenth Seed

Niemeier came into this tournament off the back of a poor run, not having won a match of any kind since Linz.

Yet she has defied expectations to reach the third round of a WTA 1000 event for the first time in her career.

First, she overcame the challenge of Xinyu Wang, beating the Chinese woman in straight sets.

And then she claimed a much bigger scalp in the form of the world number ten, Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic.

All the drama was concentrated in the first set, which saw Niemeier go a break down, only to level straight away.

The German then held two sets points on the Kvitova serve, but, when she could not take any of them and was broken herself next game, she may have feared the worst.

But she rallied to break back and it needed a tie-break to decide the outcome of the set.

That proved to be a cliff hanger as fortunes fluctuated. Niemeier earned herself four more set points, could not make any of them count, and then it was the turn of Kvitova to hold two set points of her own, neither of which she could convert.

The German finally got the job done with her seventh set point.

By contrast the second set was something of an anti-climax, as Niemeier raced into a five game lead with three service breaks under her belt.

Kvitova clawed one back, but it was just delaying the inevitable, as she conceded the match, broken again, this time to love.

Mertens v Niemeier Prediction and Tip

Because of her higher ranking and greater experience at this level, Mertens will start the favourite for this match, but the German has already shown in Madrid that she is not an opponent that should be taken lightly.
