Francisco Cerundulo v Pedro Cachin Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before.

This will be the first match between the two Argentines.

Cerundulo Knocked Out Ruud in Barcelona

This is just the second time that Cerundulo has appeared in Madrid. He was beaten in the first round of qualifying last year.

He would go on to win his first major title in Sweden four months later, and, this year, he has already shown his prowess in Masters’ events by reaching the quarter-finals in Miami, having been a surprise semi-finalist in Florida in 2022.

That is some achievement for a player regarded primarily as a clay court player.

Cerundolo has played in two events since Miami.

In Monte Carlo he was beaten in the second round by Matteo Berrettini, and, in Barcelona, where he claimed the scalp of Casper Ruud, he was knocked out at the quarter-final stage by Dan Evans, losing to the Englishman in three sets.

He was the recipient of a first round bye.

Cachin Beats Teenage Wildcard

Cachin had already gained some familiarity with the conditions in Madrid by getting to the final of a Challenger event here earlier this month, losing in the end to Alexander Shevchenko.

And he was able to use that to his advantage in his first round match with the Jordanian wildcard Abedallah Shelbayh.

After the first three games of the match went with serve, Cachin then won four in a row to take the first set.

The teenager was then broken at the start of the second set, and that ultimately proved to be decisive.

Other break points came and went for both men, but Cachin was able to manage the situation without ever being seriously threatened.

Cerundulo v Cachin Prediction and Tip

Cerundulo will be keen to translate his Miami form into a clay court tournament, and this match against his compatriot offers him a valuable stepping stone to do just that.
