Daniel Altmaier v Yannick Hanfmann Head to Head

These two Germans have never faced off in any ATP competitions but in 2020 did play in three exhibition tournaments on clay. Hanfmann had won all three of them.

Altmaier Makes Third Round as a Lucky Loser

Oscar Otte was to play Pablo Carreno Busta in his second round match but might have been licking his chops when his far better pedigreed opponent opted out of the contest and was replaced by lucky loser Daniel Altmaier.

Altmaier had lost his second qualifying round to Jurij Rodionov and did not make it to the main draw opener as a lucky loser either. As it turned out, a late second round withdrawal of Carreno Busta allowed him to make it straight into it and from there on, Altmaier looked like he wanted to have some fun.

And fun is what he would have had with the result too as an hour and 44 minutes later, Altmaier had managed a 6-4, 7-5 win over Otte despite starting out a 1/1 underdog in the contest.

As it turned out, it was just Altmaier’s second main draw win of the season too.

And with his path having gotten easier with the elimination of Lorenzo Musetti, a shock fourth round place is well within his reach here!

Hanfmann Stuns Musetti

It looks like Hanfmann is continuing from where he had left off at the Houston Open where as a qualifier he made the semifinal of the tournament at the expense of Tommy Paul.

Here, in Madrid, making his debut, Hanfmann made it to the main draw after winning a couple of qualifiers as well before overcoming Juan Pablo Varillas. Now Hanfmann might have gone into that match as a favourite but it must be quickly added that Varillas is a tricky opponent on clay.

That didn’t matter to Hanfmann who then went on to stun Lorenzo Musetti in the second round, defeating the Italian player 6-4, 7-6 (3) to make it to the third round. He was on court for an hour and 49 minutes.

While the first set was a bit of a walk in the park for Hanfmann it was in the second that he twice went a break down but retaliated with a break back. And he then raced away in the tie-breaker that followed.

Can he now make it past his fellow German opponent?

Altmaier v Hanfmann Prediction and Tip

While the Altmaier story would be such an interesting one if he did make it to the fourth round we think Hanfmann holds the edge and should come through.
