Andrey Rublev v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings between these two players and Nishioka leads 2-1. All three matches came in hardcourt competitions.

Nishioka in a Scrappy Win over Molcan

Despite being seeded and having come into the second round with an opening bye, Nishioka had come into his match against Alex Molcan as a distant second favourite. And when he lost the first set in nearly an hour, it looked like the bookmakers had got it right.

Nishioka, however, is made of sterner stuff and has rarely given in without a fight.

And that’s exactly what he did to register a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win in about two and a half hours of the encounter.

After losing the first set, Nishioka went on a bit of a rampage, earning himself three breaks of serves to go 5-0 up only to get broken two more times. He then served it out to love to wrap up the equaliser.

This was followed by Nishioka saving two break-points in the second game before earning himself that decisive break in the seventh game to clinch a place in round three.

Rublev Eases Past Wawrinka

Rublev made it his ninth win on clay this season to go with just one defeat as he eased past Stan Wawrinka in the second round.

Having won the Monte-Carlo Masters earlier this month and followed that up with a final appearance at the Banja Luka Open, Rublev registered a 7-5, 6-4 win over the experienced Swiss pro. The match lasted an hour and 23 minutes.

The first set went on serve with Rublev struggling to hold on occasions as he saved three break-points in one of the games. When the going got tough, however, it was Rublev who broke first – in the 11th game – before serving it out.

Wawrinka went 2-0 ahead in the second set only for Rublev break him three times in a row to run away with the encounter.

Rublev shouldn’t have a lot of trouble against Nishioka but there’s that catch – Nishioka has gotten better of him in the past. That wasn’t on clay though.

Rublev v Nishioka Prediction and Tip

While Rublev is our pick as a favourite at 1/5 too, we think this could get to be slightly closer than one would think. Might see over 20.5 games here.
