Daria Kasatkina v Lesia Tsurenko Head to Head

There have been four previous matches between these two players and both have shared the spoils with two wins apiece. No match was played on clay and the last time they played each other was in 2018.

Kasatkina Usurps Fellow Russian

Kasatkina was coming into this tournament off a 6-1, 6-1 rout at the hands of Paula Badosa in the Stuttgart Open last week and despite having the made semifinal at the Charleston Open, her confidence might not have been at its peak.

Which is why a straight-set win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is something she would have relished as she went one step closer to emulating her last season’s performance here in Madrid. Kasatkina had made the round of 16 at the 2022 Madrid Open.

In a match that lasted an hour and 36 minutes only, Kasatkina defeated Pavlyuchenkova 6-4, 6-3. This was despite getting broken three times in the encounter.

The two players traded four breaks of serves in the first five games of the match and Kasatkina then saved one in the ninth game of the first set. In the very next game, she broke Pavlyuchenkova to pocket the set.

Kasatkina then lost her serve in the fifth game of the second set as well but came back strongly to win the next two breaks. She served it out off the next one.

Can she now overcome the former world number 23?

Tsurenko Doubles Madrid Win Count

Tsurenko had never won a match at the Madrid Open before this edition of the tournament, having featured here seven times prior to the 2023 competition.

All of a sudden, Tsurenko has back to back victories, having first defeated Lucia Bronzetti in opening round and then overcome Jil Teichmann in the second. Interestingly enough Tsurenko had started off a favourite coming into her second round match but looked to be staring at the wrong end when she lost the first set.

Tsurenko, however, fought back to win it 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 in two hours and 32 minutes. In fact, in the deciding set, Teichmann served to make it 4-0 at one stage but was broken four times in a row following that.

That fourth break of serve came in the 10th game with Tsurenko needing three match-points to pouch the match.

The last time Tsurenko had played an opponent from Belarus or Russia, she had had to withdraw from the encounter because of some controversial comments made by the WTA chief executive. This time around, one hopes there’s a little more sensitivity from those in-charge and Tsurenko does take court.

Kasatkina v Tsurenko Prediction and Tip

Kasatkina is a 7/10 favourite here but Tsurenko will be no pushover and we can expect a gritty battle that goes the distance.
