Swiatek Ousts Grabher

Top seed Iga Swiatek began her Madrid Open campaign with a straight sets win over Julia Grabher in the second round on Friday.

Swiatek, who had a first round bye, needed an hour and 19 minutes to beat the Ausrian lucky loser 6-3, 6-2.

The Polish player was broken once in the match while she capitalised on four of seven breaking chances to move into the third round in Madrid in just her second appearance. On her debut in 2021, she was knocked out in the round of 16.

The 21-year-old has improved her season record to 21-4. She extended her clay court winning streak to 5-0 in 2023. Swiatek was crowned the Stuttgart Open champion last week.

Overall, the world no. 1 has won two titles this year, including one in Doha. She has also had a runner-up finish in Dubai. She has reached at least the round of 16 of all tournaments this year and will be looking to keep that record intact with a win on Sunday.

With the win, the left-handed American improved to 10-9 for the season. She had started the year by reaching a quarterfinal in Hobart, but has not made it to the last eight since then.

Pera’s beat performances this season included third round finishes at the Australian and the Indian Wells Open. She had also won two rounds at the Charleston Open before being sent packing by Daria Kasatkina in the round of 16.
